This post below was a post earlier this year when the station went down – 94.9 The Surf is Back on the Air and playing Carolina Beach Music

POSTED Jan 20, 2011
Most everyone in this beach music industry (friends, fans and artists) have at some point listened to 94.9 The Surf either on the radio down at the beach or on the Internet. Last week I was getting emails and calls asking if I knew anything about the Internet radio station being down. This week, as most have read about or witnessed first hand, the station is off the air. Knowing that my radio was tuned in every day, I can imagine how many people are missing the voices of Ted Bell and Ray Scott as well as the syndicated shows from Charlie Brown and Joey Warren. I am not sure what is going to happen…if anything to the The Surf. There are other stations out there that feature beach music shows. A lot of Internet Radio Stations play the songs we love. Are you looking for a place to go on the WEB? Click over to Southern Soul and listen in. Let me know what you think!

  1. I spent the better part of the last 3 months at the beach. Being back home, already missing the beach, I turned my computer on to get caught up with what is going on in NMB and listen to my favorite music and all of a sudden it’s not there! This is so sad. Like so many, it was my connection when I am not down there. Good grief I cannot believe the new year is starting this way! What a loss

  2. Let them know you missed them and how much you love that station, they will appriciate hearing and knowing your comments…I was touched by this page, and as a fan of this radio station I was excited also when they came back on the Air with new ownership.. Glad the locals continued the Beach music movement. I Love it! The younger generations need recruitment and exposer to better, happier, quality of music such as beach music! I know I did;)

  4. 94.9 The Surf is on the air now. It’s the Carolina Beach Music and Beach Music oldies 24 hours a day. Two notes: (1)We will begin streaming before the end of the coming week. While we are rebuilding the station website, you will be able to access the stream via warpradio.com
    (2) The on the air signal will be at a slightly reduced power for a week or so while we receive and install new componets for the station’s transmitter. As soon as this is completed, you will hear a better fidelity from The Surf than has been heard before. On the air will be Bill Norman in the mornings, Ted Bell in the mid-days, and a long time very popular Myrtle Beach radio personality takes the afternoon. Say welcome to “The Deacon”. For a long time he was on WZKQ and later Sunny 106.5. At night will the “The Surf after dark.”

  6. 94.9 THE SURF @ North Myrtle Beach is BACK!!! & boy aren’t we glad. Yes, there is another 94.9 Star Country somewhere out there (Salem or Selma, I believe) but please understand that this has NO connection to the 94.9 THE SURF that we know & love. Congratulations to the new owners: Carolina Beach Music, LLC, they have worked long & hard to get the station back on the air & to help beach music survive on the radio.

  7. Sure do miss this online station. Listening from Ohio gives that connection to the beach. Surely someone will figure out a way to send beach music up this way once again.

  8. I live in West Virginia and my connection to the beach is through 94.9 The Surf. I have listened on line for 3 years now and always tune it in when I am within distance of the beach on my trips there. The Surf is a part of Myrtle Beach and needs to be brought back. It has won beach station of the year for 12 years, this alone says it all. I am very disappointed that we can no longer tune in. I would hope that the issues would be resolved and The Surf goes back on line.

  9. 94.9 The Surf will return on-the-air either on Wednesday, April 13th, or Thursday, April 14, 2011. It will still be “the Surf” and it will be Carolina Beach Music.

  10. I am CRUSHED! No SURF?!?! Had not been down to NMB for several months – did not dream that my first connection on the road (in Rockingham) was nothing but static. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?? Obviously not much.. so much for fans, fun, and music – not to mention our favorite DJs.

  11. Can’t believe The “Myrtle Beach” that i grew up with..like my second home. Has became what it is today. Tear down the amusement part, get rid of bike week and move those tourist to “Broad Way at the Beach”…hoo hum. Now you are getting rid of another icon the “Surf”, i guess it’s all about real-estate now. Selling big condo’s that block at the sun and ocean. My “Myrtle Beach” is gone! Looks like i’ll start spending my summers at another beach.

  12. I own a place at the beach and live in Chicago. My connection to what was going on down there was always through the Surf on the Internet. That was a station like no other. It set the mood for the Grand Strand. Who will play all those great new songs coming out by the locals that are categorically Shag and Beach music? I suppose noone and we all lose. It is truly sad to not be able to listen to one of my favorite stations from 800 miles away or when I am there looking out at the beach from the condo. Just another great piece of history bought and sold.

  13. It is totally amazing to me that someone could end history!!! What are they thinking?? I agree, I turned on the most recent 94.9 and about lost my morning coffee. There’s NO MUSIC LIKE BEACH MUSIC…..and like they say “if you can’t SHAG you ain’t *%@! PLEASE COME BACK

  14. I am so sad to know that it is gone (94.9) I loved that station and when we are at our place at the beach that is where the radio stayed in the car and house. I cannot believe that I turn to 94.9 and hear nothing but static.
I really miss the beach music and this is a shame to those to enjoyed it so very much.
Please bring back the best station ever!!!!!!!!!!! Summer time is on the way and it will not be the same either not having the portable on the beach or in the boat. Please return.

  15. Beach music came into my soul as a lifeguard and my times at the pavilion dancing the “shag”. Therefore, when I often visit the beach, “The Surf” brings that part of me to life. I really hope and PRAY the station will come back and continue to help tell the story of the “shag” which is a large part of South Carolina and especially the Myrtle Beach area. “A strong past promotes a living future”.

  18. Loss of “The Surf” was like the loss of a family member. Susie and I miss Ted and Ray terribly!! It reminds me of the Monday morning at Lake Norman when I hit the power button on my reveiver which was set at 106.5 and got some kind of trash that made my cat hide……

  19. Fell in love with the station this summer while we were at Sunset beach. Then, when I found out they streamed their music, there wasn’t a day that I didn’t turn them on first thing and off when I went to bed. Especially loved Ted Bells’ request time and all the fantastic history he could interject about the music and artists…..I would be the first to sign the petition to bring the station back to the air…shame to waste such good talent

  22. WNMB at AM Stereo 900 and online at wnmb900.com with 24 hour streaming has Ted Bell from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., along with lots of great oldies and Beach Music during the rest of the day. There’s also just about everything concerning North Myrtle Beach on the website. Stay tuned for more announcements coming soon.

  27. We are disappointed the Surf is off the air. We hope it comes back with the same format but stronger. We find out so much about the beach and what’s going on. We came to Myrtle Beach when the boardwalk was reopened because we heard about it on The Surf. Please do whatever it takes to get back on the air.

  30. Bo,

I really miss 94.9 The Surf up here in Illinois. We’ve been bringing Shag up here, and The Surf kept us up to date with the latest songs. We all felt like we knew the North Myrtle Beach area just from listening to the shows. Several weeks ago I E-mailed the NMB Chamber of Commerce who told me two guys had bought the station, and the new format was unknown at that time. I hope you keep us up to date if they start streaming again. Thanks!

  31. Hey Bo! I have always enjoyed your site for the music that I grew up listening to as a young boy and is part of me now as a man…I also enjoyed listening to 94.9 while in my car or at work on my computer. There was a difference however, as a radio station with people that you met and recognized out in the crowds while at NMB. Over time you develop relationships with them and celebrate awards and of course mourne with them during their losses like with Billy Smith and also the owner of their station, artists like General and too many others who created our “sound”. I guess that at our age we see that friends are very important to us and it is clear that we have now lost not only a friend but a small family of friends. My heart goes out to all who lost their jobs and their love…I hope that they will land on their feet and hopefully one day be given the opportunity to be reunited at 94.9 as in the good ole recent days! Thank you for your music which helps to soften our hurt and loss…please keep our music going as you too are part of our circle of friends and beach music family!

  37. Hey Bo! One of my facebook friends messaged me and said that she heard that the station had been bought…. and that it would be back on the air with same format soon. Have you heard this? Is this just a vicious rumor? I tuned in to Ted at the AM station yesterday and today….but it’s just not the same…although, better than nothing and I suppose I’ll get used to it. And yes, there are other internet beach music “shows” out there, but with 94.9 The Surf, you could keep up with a lot of happenings at NMB, too. That’s the part I miss the most. Take care, and hoping to see you soon.
